To protect your loved one, you need to know how to recognize signs of nursing home abuse and neglect. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), elder abuse falls into the following categories:

• Physical Abuse is intentionally inflicted injury or violence, including pushing, slapping, or kicking. Signs of physical abuse include bruising, cuts, fractures, burns, and frequent or unexplained injuries. Your loved one may also display signs of trauma, agitation, or fear, especially in the presence of their abuser.
• Emotional or psychological abuse occurs when a caregiver threatens, humiliates, harasses, or causes distress to a resident, often by isolating them from social engagement. Those who experience emotional abuse may become depressed and withdrawn, have difficulty sleeping, and stop participating in hobbies and activities.
• Neglect occurs when a caregiver or facility fails to meet a resident’s basic needs, such as supplying food, shelter, clothing, and medical care. Signs of neglect include bedsores, dehydration, malnutrition, poor personal hygiene, and an unclean facility.
• Sexual abuse includes any form of unwanted sexual touching, attention, or coercion, including verbal sexual harassment. Sexual abuse victims may have physical signs on their breasts and genitals. They may also display signs of trauma or engage in regressive behaviors.
• Financial abuse is the theft or illegal use of a resident’s property or assets. Signs include missing money or property, unauthorized changes to banking and retirement accounts, and using a resident’s identity to open lines of credit.
