Just because there’s a law on the books about how to drive your vehicle safely, doesn’t mean people are following it. And I couldn’t think of a better example than DUI or DWI. There are very strict penalties for driving while intoxicated and drunk driving, yet people still continue to do that.
When it comes to hands-free driving, it’s much the same way. There’s a law against driving with your cellphone and holding your cellphone because it’s dangerous, and just like drunk driving, it causes accidents and it hurts people.
But many people, thousands of motorists in Maryland, are driving every day not adhering to that hands-free law. They’re holding their phones, they’re looking at their phones, they’re putting it here, they’re putting it there. They’re using their phone while they’re driving and they’re causing accidents.
So, unfortunately, the laws that seek to prevent these kinds of crashes due to distracted driving and cellphone operation—I’m sure there are plenty of people who do follow it, but there’s also a lot of people who do not adhere to that. And those are the ones causing accidents and injuring people on the roads in Maryland.
